October to April: the long days
Warm days, cold dawns and the best light on the lagoons. This is the season for the high lakes and the geysers, and for the summit of Cerro Toco.
The altiplano winter
In January and February storms sometimes build over the high plateau in the afternoon. Roads to the lakes can close for a day. We keep a spare day in every itinerary for exactly this.
May to September: the long nights
Cold, still and very clear. Nights last up to thirteen hours, which is why Dark Skies runs in these months. Days are sunny and around 20 °C in San Pedro; mornings at El Tatio fall to −15 °C.
